FAQ

What will our sessions look like?

During the intake session, we will discuss all the domains of your life (work, household tasks, hobbies, etc) and pinpoint the areas you are struggling with the most. We will also work through the Sensory Profile assessment to get a good idea of your sensory needs and preferences. We will discuss what you want your life to feel like and any barriers that might be in your way.

During the treatment sessions, we will problem solve through the areas of difficulty discussed in your intake session. I will provide suggestions for ways to modify your rhythms, environment, and tasks so that your day to day life is easier. I can provide recommendations for products I think might be useful and/or other professionals that you might benefit from seeing.

Will I have homework?

Maybe? Everything I suggest is just that-a suggestion. It's often helpful for you to implement changes we discussed in between sessions so you can report back the next session and we can tweak or change directions if needed. No two bodies are the same, so there will be some trial and error involved in figuring out what works for you.

I've already seen a bunch of doctors and a PT. Why do I need OT?

Each member of the medical team has a unique role to play, and OTs fill a gap left by the rest of the healthcare team. If you've ever walked away from an appointment and thought "I'm glad I finally have an explanation for my symptoms, but how does this actually change how I live day to day?" OT is for you! We have a deep medical knowledge to understand the intricacies of your medical conditions coupled with a creative brain that is wired for problem solving!

COST

Will you ask me to buy expensive equipment?

I recognize that any piece of equipment marketed as "medical" will automatically be expensive. I will always start with the cheapest, easiest, DIY solutions first.  All budgets are welcome!

Why don’t you take insurance?

I've chosen not to accept insurance for several reasons. First, insurance usually requires a formal diagnosis in order to pay for Occupational Therapy services. Many people with hypermobility and/or neurodivergence do not have access to formal diagnosis. The lack of knowledgeable providers means people either must travel long distances, pay large out of pocket fees, or spend ages on wait lists to obtain formal diagnosis. Additionally, insurance companies dictate the number, length, and type of sessions I can provide. This severely limits my ability to provide people with the care they need.

I am dedicated to making my services available to all, so I have a limited number of sliding scale spots available for those whose finances are a barrier.

How many sessions will I need?

This is totally up to you! Most people need an intake session plus 3-4 treatment sessions to work through all the domains of their life that need to be adapted. If several months pass and you come upon a new challenge and would like my help, we can always meet again!

CAN I HELP?

Can you help connect me with other EDS literate healthcare providers?

Yes! I am connected to the EDS community here in Colorado, and can assist in finding knowledgeable professionals elsewhere.

Do I need to have an official diagnosis to see you?

No! There are many barriers to formal diagnosis of both hypermobility and neurodivergence. You will be able to apply any technique or adaptation we discuss regardless of your diagnosis status.

I’m not hypermobile but I have chronic pain. Can you help me?

Yes! Chronic pain happens for a myriad of reasons, not just hypermobility. My experience with chronic pain is vast—both personally and professionally. Many mainstream healthcare professionals are operating on outdated pain science, so it can be tricky to find someone who can help. I can assist you in applying the latest chronic pain science to your life so you can get back to doing the things you love!

Do you see children?

Children often start showing signs of hypermobility/neurodivergence at a young age and damage can be done if the adults in their life do not understand their needs. Please contact me to discuss your specific circumstance. If your child's primary condition is neurodivergence, I would recommend seeking a pediatric OT to address that, as there are many knowledgeable professionals with expertise in early diagnosed neurodivergence.

I'm hypermobile but haven't ever considered I might be neurodivergent. Can you help me figure that out?

As an Occupational Therapist, I am not qualified to diagnose. However, I can provide education on the overlaps between neurodivergence and hypermobiliy and point you to resources for further exploration. The good news is that you don't need a formal diagnosis to begin accommodating yourself if you suspect you might be neurodivergent!
